It is the 3rd year of the 4th Era ( 4E 3 ), and the world is still recovering from the Oblivion Crisis that had happened only 4 years ago.
When Mehrunes Dagon, the Daedric Prince of Destruction, stepped into Tamriel from his plane of Oblivion, he was not expecting a Hero to be ready to stop him. With the help of the Hero the would be Emperor of the Empire, Martin Septim, nobly sacrificed himself to become the Avatar of Akatosh, the Aedric God of Time, and stop Mehrunes Dagon from destroying all of Tamriel. The battle lasted only a moment, but the moment was forever immortalized in the hearts of men and mer.
Parts of the Imperial City were left in ruins, but since then, the people have been slowly rebuilding their city from the wake of destruction. Tamriel as well, slowly put itself back together from the oblivion crisis' scars.
This is the tale from the years prior... and a week ago you found yourself in the hands of imperial guards. You were set in prison and told to wait until you were sorted out among other prisoners.
