"Aipom, pomaiai. Popompom." [ translation: she's kinda busy, but not too busy. I'll let her know you're here. ]  Aipom dashes down across the room to their trainer. "Aipom ai!" Aipom puts the screwdriver onto the desk and gives themself a boost with their tailhand. Jen looks up from her work. "Hm? Oh, we got customers! Come on over!" Nick walks forwards, expecting HAZEL to walk with them. "Sorry about that, I get pretty engrossed in my work. I'm Jen. Either of you need something repaired?""Yeah. HAZEL's got like, a vintage pokegear that stopped working recently."Jen takes a look at the pokegear for a moment. "Hm... I'll have to take a closer look at it. doesn't seem to show much sign on the exterior, aside from some scuffs and scratches. It's amazing how long these old models tend to last.""Do you think you'll be able to fix it?""Depends on if I have the replacement parts needed. They stopped manufacturing this model quite a while ago. I could probably add some slightly upgraded hardware though."

HAZEL walks up with Nick, waiting to get a word in. "It vigorously overheated after receiving some bad data, I had to dunk it in the waters of a Surf attack to stop it from exploding in the middle of a contest. I... I hope you can fix it up. Kyle said you were probably the only one who could." She says, wiping away a tear.
Meanwhile, FLOWER walks over to look at the shelf to Jen's left, as curious as any Pokemon would be in a room full of strange tech to look at.

Jen takes a second look at the pokegear with this new information. "Hmm... yeah, that does sound like the sort of thing that could use some next-edition parts. Pokegears of this model can't even handle modern emojis properly."
"Can you fix it though?" Nick asks.
"Of course." A pause after that comment about Kyle. "Ah, Professor Kyle... Always my most vocal spokesman... I can't count how many times he's referred hapless trainers to my door. I'm not sure if I'd be the only one, but probably one of the most experienced repair experts in this city. I think I should be able to have your baby fixed in 24 hours."
On the shelves there is a variety of salvaged parts from various assorted electronics, as well as some partially repaired devices. A dowsing machine, a food processor, an exp share, a VS Seeker...

Jen blinks in surprise, how did they run into professor Kyle without even knowing where the school was?
A moment of doubt.
Aipom scampers over towards FLOWER, and makes a bit of chatter. "Ai, aipom!" [ Translation: you look pretty! ]
Seeing her aipom at ease, it lifts the doubt to a degree. That shaymin appears to be well cared for and well groomed, and has been trusted to stick around without fear of running away.
How well you care for your pokemon tends to affect how others treat you, especially in the Pinto region.
"...it's not too far off, just a couple blocks to the east, next to the mini-mart. How did you meet Kyle without knowing where the school was?"
"We ran into him at the contest hall after HAZEL and FLOWER wiped the floor with that primadonna with the Milotic."
Jen glances over at FLOWER and and smiles She then looks over at HAZEL. "You managed to defeat Flashella? About time someone knocked them off their pedestal. Tell you what, I'll fix your pokegear for 1500 P."
For those uninitiated, 1500 P is roughly equivalent to $15 USD. Pretty cheap for a repair job on short notice.

"Yeah, I doubt they were expecting a coordinator and Pokemon pair that swept the Sinnoh Super Contest circuit a few years back. I don't blame them though, I wasn't planning on competing when I came here on vacation. I mostly entered to kill time with Nick." She explains, while handing over the Pokeyen

"You and your friend are pretty interesting, I'll tell you that." Jen accepts the payment and stuffs it in her jeans pocket. "Pleasure doing business with you."
Nick turns to face HAZEL. "I think we should prolly retire for the night. The pokemon center in town has trainer lodging, right?"
Something that had been skipped over before, is that HAZEL had gotten a handful of local coupons and vouchers for winning that contest, including one for a free night stay at a fairly decent hotel not too far away.

"I've got a voucher for a good hotel in town if you'd rather stay there?" She says, offering it to Nick. FLOWER pads back over, climbing onto their trainer to try and steal her hat

"ooh, that sounds cool!" Nick accepts the voucher. It says Trick Room Hotel on it.
Thankfully it also has the address and directions from the contest hall.
"Thanks again, Jen."
"Don't mention it."
Voucher in hand, Nick leads the way out the door.
"Let's go!"
The sun has fallen below much of the tallest buildings, casting long shadows in their wake. Thankfully, the traffic has thinned out quite a bit (which is kinda weird, considering that sunset is often when rush hour would take place back in Nick's home state, but perhaps there's a good reason over here?)
Nick simply takes in the relative calm moment while walking. Slope seems to be following along, though perhaps a bit more leisurely than the rest.

"So, are you excited to begin your Pokemon journey?" HAZEL asks, turning to her traveling companion. FLOWER has decided to hitch a ride on Slope's back. They continue to approach the hotel, coupon in hand.

"Yeah! I've probably already mentioned this, but I've wanted to do this sorta thing since I was literally 9 years old. A chance to go places, meet new friends, see new wonders..." Nick looks off into the distance wistfully.
"Back where I came from, we only had pokemon in the games and cartoons. It was really only a distraction from everyday life, but it was one I treasured."
Their gaze lowers a bit, remembering the demise of their homeworld.
"...That place is long gone though. Its strange how things work out I guess?"
The hotel is just a block away. The crosswalk seems to be cooperative, thankfully.

"I guess so." Nick waits briefly for the crosswalk and then walks across, having faith that HAZEL and Slope (with FLOWER in tow) will follow.
"Its weird though. Main reason I got here is because I was using some magic thing to try and go home. Almost seems like that thing from a game I made once..."
They arrive across the street, in front of the Trick Room hotel.
"Welp, looks like we're here. Shall we go in?"

Chapter 9: A Trick of the eyes  Nick, HAZEL, and their pokemon enter the hotel. It looks rather sizable and well-lit, though a bit quiet. A single person with long red and black hair loosely bundled into a ponytail stands at the front desk. "Welcome to the Trick Room Hotel. Will you two and your pokemon be staying here tonight?" |
